Keep Your Garbage Bin Smelling Fresh with This Simple Trick

This is a subtitle for your new post

If you've ever opened your garbage bin only to be greeted by a nasty odour, you're not alone. Smelly bins are a common household problem — but at O'Shea Cleaning and Support Services, Swan Hill's trusted cleaning team, we know a simple and effective solution that doesn’t require harsh chemicals or expensive products.

Whether you’re cleaning out your kitchen, bathroom, or commercial bins, this quick tip will help keep things fresh and hygienic between cleanings.

What You’ll Need:

  • ½ cup of baking soda
  • 5–10 drops of essential oil (eucalyptus, lemon, or tea tree are ideal)
  • Coffee filter or paper towel
  • Rubber band (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Add the baking soda to the coffee filter.
  2. Add the essential oil drops and mix lightly.
  3. Fold or tie the filter closed using a rubber band to create a DIY deodorising sachet.
  4. Place the sachet at the bottom of your bin, underneath the liner or bag.

For best results, replace the sachet every 1–2 weeks.

Bonus Tip from Our Swan Hill Cleaning Professionals:

Before adding your deodoriser, give your bin a deep clean. Rinse it with hot water and scrub it with a mix of white vinegar and dish soap. Let it dry completely before adding the sachet. This routine helps kill bacteria and neutralise deep-set odours.

Why It Works:

  • Baking soda neutralises odours rather than masking them
  • Essential oils add a pleasant, clean fragrance
  • It’s chemical-free, eco-friendly, and safe for kids and pets
