The Lemon Steam Trick

September 9, 2025

The Easiest Way to Clean Your Microwave 🍋

Let’s be honest — microwaves cop a hiding. From splatters to sticky spills, it doesn’t take long before they’re looking (and smelling) a bit worse for wear. The good news? You don’t need to spend ages scrubbing. The humble lemon has a trick up its sleeve that makes microwave cleaning quick, natural, and fuss-free.

Why This Hack Works

Lemons are packed with citric acid — a natural antibacterial that also cuts through grease. Add a bit of steam power, and the dried-on food softens, making it a breeze to wipe away. No chemicals, no elbow grease.

What You’ll Need

  • 1 fresh lemon
  • 1 microwave-safe bowl
  • 1 cup of water
  • A clean cloth or sponge

How to Do It

  1. Prep the Lemon – Cut it in half, squeeze the juice into your bowl, and toss the halves in too.
  2. Add Water – About 1 cup is perfect.
  3. Steam It Up – Microwave on high for 3–5 minutes, until the water boils and the window steams up.
  4. Let It Rest – Keep the door closed for another 3–5 minutes. The steam will loosen the grime.
  5. Wipe Clean – Carefully remove the bowl, then use a sponge or cloth to wipe down the inside. The gunk should come away easily.

💡 Pro Tip: For stubborn spots, sprinkle a little baking soda on your sponge for gentle scrubbing power.

The Result

In under 10 minutes, you’ll have a fresh, sparkling microwave — with zero harsh chemicals and almost no effort.
